Choosing a putter: blade vs mallet, length and feel
4 min read · Updated October 2026
You use the putter more than any other club, so it's worth getting right. It also doesn't need to be the most expensive.
Blade or mallet
Blade putters are slim and compact and are often liked for their feel. Mallet putters are larger and usually more stable on off-center hits, which can help consistency. Neither is better for everyone.
Match it to your stroke
Golfers whose putter swings on a slight arc often like blade putters with some toe hang. Golfers who stroke the putter straight back and through often like face-balanced mallets. If you're unsure, try a few at a shop or a putting green.
Length and grip
- Standard lengths are around 33 to 35 inches, but the right length depends on your height and posture.
- A larger grip can calm the hands. A thinner one can add feel.
- Weight and alignment lines are personal. Choose what makes it easy to aim.
Feel matters most
If you can, hold a putter before buying and roll some putts. Confidence over the ball matters as much as technology. A putter you trust usually beats one with more features.
Buying smart
- Last season's putters are often much cheaper and nearly identical.
- Pre-owned putters can be a good value. Check the face, the shaft and whether the headcover is included.
- Check right or left hand and the length before you buy.
